     The games appear to use Graphics Magician displays, at least for the
Penguin versions. That's how Ring Quest gets so many full-screen hires pics
on just two disk sides.

     As you say, they're not exactly the most beautiful displays-- adventures
like Sherwood Forest do much better. On the other hand, players thought it
was pretty nifty to have any kind of pic to go along with what is, basically,
a long-play Text adventure.

     Which is fine for Mac users.

     A pretty nice Apple II approach is to go with IIgs graphics and redo the
game as a HyperCard stack. (The two arcade games in Ring Quest can be
dropped.)  

     A good example of such an adventure is Kim Howe's "Shipwrecked". See
