so this is the story- I'm trying to copy some 5" floppies, either onto
3" floppies or to another os9 mac via the serial port. I was told that
a IIgs would be the best way to do this, so I went out and got one. the
problem is I dont' know how to get this thing to boot.
when I turn it on, all I get is an orange "check system disk" screen
with an apple bounding back and forth. assuming I read the faq
correctly, the 'woz' logo and lack of any rom info says that this is a
rom0 machine.
I DLd a copy of gs/os 6, but it doesn't work (which I take it is no
surprise on this config). do I really need to get a rom1 or rom3 and
boot gs/os 6 for this? does anyone even *HAVE* copies of earlier OSs
available for DL anymore?
assuming I've read the faq correctly, the IIgs should be able to boot
off of IIe 5" prodos system disks, but mine won't. anyone have any
ideas?

it's been a strange day.
not even a "2+2=5" kind of day, more like "2+2=... fish".
Go to apple.com/support and in the downloads section is a link to older
software. You have to remember, the Apple II's didn't have hard drives
built-in to them. To boot requires a floppy disk in the drive with an
Apple system on it. Anyway, in the old downloads section of apple.com
is an 800K image file called System Utilities. If you have a Mac with
a 3.5" drive, just download it and image it to a true 800K diskette.
Then plop that into the 3.5" disk drive on your IIgs and it will boot
to the Apple System Utilities. The System Utilities will allow you to
format disks and copy disks.
