They are, as you might suspect, quite similar.

But the implementation, features, and timings of the two machines
are quite different, and the books reflect that difference.

"Understanding the Apple IIe" does not cover the circuit and timings
of the Apple II.  The _functionality_ of the IIe contains the functionality
of the II, so that part is there, as well as remarks contrasting the
implementation of the IIe and the II.

Excellent chapters on the Disk ][ and its Controller are in both
books.
