It took me a second to understand that too.  My thought pattern
usually goes like "Is it a typo?"  Look at the keyboard and see what
keys are near those characters.. Hmm.. "<3" isn't close to any 2
letter or 3 letter word I know.. Maybe it's "ascii art" that I haven't
seen before.. Ah, a heart!  That was a new one to me..
