I suspect that most newer OCR software can read grayscale images with no
problems (FineReader handles grayscale, anyway). That said, I usually
convert grayscale to monochrome before feeding images to the OCR program
anyway; I can often do a better job of finding the correct threshold for a
group of pages than the OCR software, which leads to a more accurate
conversion that needs fewer edits.
