The Screen shot you posted is 40 column mode and the 
garbled text is exactly what I get if I type

Contiki Programs Desktop comes out as
C/.4)+) P2/'2!-3 D%3+4/0

and

About Contiki comes out as
A"/54 C/.4)+)

Which is the text on the Contiki start up screen. The 
3 other characters in a box are a sort of Icon
