Theoretically--if anyone bothered to write the protocol stacks
for the Apple II.

This would certainly be feasible for the IIgs, but an effort, and
a full protocol stack for the //e would be much more difficult,
because of addressing limitations.

Ironically, we are now in this very situation, with a third-party
Ethernet card for the Apple II line, with limited IIgs software
support and no //e software support. This may be why Apple
decided to drop their card.

If you go to www.a2central.com you will find the following:

ProDOS 8 driver for LANceGS card available to developers Author: Sheppy February 20, 2004 ///SHH Systeme now has available to developers an 8-bit driver
for the LANceGS ethernet card. The driver is only available upon
request, as it must be built into the application that wishes to
use it. Email looceelec@yahoo.de to request the driver.

It's good to see that the wind is shifting.

But, of course, any 8-bit driver will need to be integrated into
whatever application uses it. Why not simply post the source
and documentation? What's the worst that could happen--
more software for the card?

I can understand why the designer prefers not to post the
Gerber files for the board, but why the reticence about the
software interface?

But I stick to my contention that 64KB addressing will make
a set of TCP protocols quite difficult on an 8-bit Apple II. (OK,
that's the invitation for someone to prove me wrong. ;-)

Check out amazing quality sound for 8-bit Apples on my

Contiki runs of the 8 bit Commodore 64 and several other 8 bit machines. A TCP IP stack is possible, if someone would only port it to the Apple ][. I wish I had enough programming knowledge to tackle it.
