AFAIK, no clear need was ever demonstrated to port Contiki, since
it was only used for approximate timeouts.

If a 60Hz "heartbeat" interrupt is needed, using VBL to generate
an IRQ is the easiest way (of course, you'd probably want to use an
annunciator to gate it so software could enable it only when needed).
That would be 1 DIP and five wires, including power.  A VBL interrupt
would also be useful for animation, and was implemented in the IIc.

A slot plug-in solution is a little more complex to build (using a counter
chain), but easier to install.  Probably easier just to use a mouse card.
