They are pretty slow...

I remember a full file copy as faster.

It's a hard problem to do well, and if the program is careful so that
it could survive an interruption, it's even slower (which is why a
backup is recommended).

The full file copy is completely safe and (obviously) does not
require a prior backup.  ;-)
