If you have an RGB monitor connected to the RGB port of your IIgs then
the output will always be crisp and clear regardless of what colours
are being used. However, if you are using the composite video out on
the IIgs then the colour bleeding can often make text impossible to
read. Especially if you are viewing the Super Hi-Res screens such as
a 640x200 desktop. By selecting the monochrome display option in the
control panel you are killing the colour on the composite video out
and therefore getting a nice crisp and clear image on your composite
monitor.

I used to use a Commodore 1702 and an Apple Monitor II green screen on
my IIgs before I got an RGB monitor for it. I used the 1702 for
playing games and viewing pictures and such in colour but I used the
Monitor II when I was using the IIgs desktop. When I used the green
screen I changed the control panel to monochrome because it also made
the output of the SHR screen colours solid shades instead of the
patterns of vertical lines like you normally get when viewing Hi-Res
on a monochrome monitor.
