Okay, now I'm officially intrigued :).

I'm aware of the RGB v.s. composite issue, but the thing is, the good-
ol' text mode (like that of the control panel itself) seems to be always
in monochrome, even when the display option is set to "color".  The
_shading_ (luma) of text does change according to the color choice, yet
it's still in B&W.

OTOH, the mixed-mode text (and all the graphic images for that matter)
does behave as you described... maybe that's how it is?  Or is there a
software switch to enable chroma signal in the text mode?
