You sure can.  Back I high school I hooked up out computer lab's
Syquest drive to my IIgs via the HS SCSI Card.  Worked like a champ!

My opinion is that if you want a high capacity external drive for the
GS, then try to get one of the IOmega external SCSI Zip/Jaz drives. 
They work really well and you actually have a chance at finding new
disks.  I don't know where one would find Syquest disks these days.
