The Children of Woz, continued

Whoa- Come on guys! Cool down a little!

OK. My view on things:

The Power Mac G5 is a fantastic computer, and I wish I could afford
one right now. Macs, in general, are great computers, and I've had
many positive experiences with them. Windoze is a disaster from an
uncaring, styleless company.

Now, about building your own PC-- It's great. And you're right,
Supertimer, you do get a "hands on" feel about your PC if you build it
yourself and you can select the best components to suit your needs and
preferences. That's why I'm planning on building my own PC soon. And
you're right, it's something you generally can't get with a Mac, which
is unfortunate.

Most of the stuff out there is just copy-cat stuff though. It's not
from an original company with an original design (like the Apple II).
I think that's the major difference between a modern PC and an old
Apple II.

But, truthfully, most people are not computer enthusiasts like we are.
They're not inclined to or motivated to build their own PC. Most
people don't have time or motivation to learn about and hunt down the
components they need. They want, and they should get, a complete
package. They need something that "just works", and in that, the Mac
excels marvelously.

Now, that is one philosophy. As you see, the PM G5 is internally
expandable, because it's targeted at people who desire or need this
capability. It would be great if we could selectively, "hands on",
build a modern Apple computer. But, we can't. That doesn't make the
Macintosh inferior in any way, though. I'm on an eMac (1 Ghz. G4) and
it's been a truly great machine so far. Macs are not "crap", and
neither is the Apple II "hands on" approach. I think there is room for
both philosophies.

Neither building your own PC or buying it already assembled is a
"flaw", it is a preference, depending on the end user's interests,
time and technical inclinations.

I prefer AMD over Intel. But, unfortunately, they don't design the
whole package, so they have no say in what other hardware or OS will
run atop their CPUs and they have to maintain compatibility with the
mainstream (Intel) CPUs, simply because of market demands, so they
have a few restrictions, and they aren't the Apple of old.
Nevertheless, I think AMD's a better, more creative company than Intel
and I'll use AMD CPUs rather than Intel if I can in my PC.
