I have used IIe with workstation cards for several years to share
Appletalk printers on a network with Macs, including a Apple LaserWriterNT
(rip), Imagewriter II's, and now a Apple LaserWriter 12/640.
I do not remember having problems. Except, the ATINIT file included with
the Workstation software is buggy. Not totally defective but doesn't
rember the chosen printer very well. Apple never released a better ATINIT
file, but a corrected one was included with the PublishIt software
(probably v3 and v4). Try getting the PI version from a site such as
asimov.
I haven't used the Chooser much since configing the printer, but IRC there
are 3 or 4 windows to jump around on and the first ones must be set
correctly before the ATalk printers show up in the rightmost window. I
keep Appleworks running on my IIe all the time so I can't check without
quitting first, but I can if I need to. I also am booting from an
Appleshare server so I need to find the //e ATinit file as opposed to
the IIGS ATinit file :-)
So, it does work. You also might need the imagewriter emulation file if
you are going to use a laserwriter.
