You may also want to verify that they are actualy .gif files...
sometimes jpegs will get renamed as giffs (and vice versa) without
actually being converted. They'll still render in your browser, so you
probably wouldn't notice until you got to ][GIF

I've also done some fiddling with ][GIF and had no problems with the
newer standard (gif89a), so I'm sure that's not the issue, unless maybe
they're layered (animated) giffs.

One of the cool things about ][GIF is that you can save .gif to HGR
which means you can use images created in PhotoShop etc to make hires
screens for your Apple II programs (just make sure your original has the
right pixel dimensions - works best with b/w images).
