The only computer company to successfully make the transition from their
8-bit lines to their 16/32-bit lines, with any degree of compatibility
/at all/ was Acorn. And even then it was pretty kludged.
The II range had a longer run than /any/ 8-bit computer, it was the only
machine in 1991 that had a direct lineage to the 1977 originals. And
that was despite Apple's attempts not to just abandon it, but to
deliberately cripple it.
