New technologies are emerging that will be as fast as SRAM and
inherently nonvlatile. It'll be a few years, but that's what we're
talking about, right?

ROM is always a problem in any environment that requires updating.
A year down the line, you're a few hundred disk accesses away from
having a running system when you power up.
