Since the topic of refinishing computers comes up here once in a while,
I figured I'd post my recent experience with the new Krylon Fusion spray
paint.
Fusion is advertised as being specifically formulated for plastics, so I
thought I'd gamble a few bucks and try refinishing an Apple II monitor
(in black, of course).
According to the label no surface preparation is necessary other than
cleaning with an ammonia-based cleaner. I used Windex w/ammonia which
seems to have worked just fine.
Like any spray-bomb, it was a serious challenge to get an even coat
(outside with a slight breeze) and I ended up with a couple of runs. The
paint tacks up very quickly, so I half-smeared/half-sanded the runs
out... that part looks bloody awful. The parts that received a nice even
coat look great -- the original texture shows through nicely and takes a
bit of the gloss away from the finish.
One anomaly is that the dark greyish paint on the back of the monitor
had a "bubbly" reaction so I'll have to keep it against the wall ;-)
The paint dries in 15 minutes and after 24 hrs looks and feels like a
solid finish, definitely much better than regular enamel spray paint.
I don't think it comes in any of the stock Apple II colours, but if
you're into customizing this is probably the ideal paint.
