In my case, I had been having trouble with my news-server (I've since got a new
one) and when my post didn't show up after a few minutes I posted again.  It
still didn't show up so after several hours I figured I'd give it another try.
No luck.  I tried one more time and then in frustration gave up.  The next day
there they were, all four messages.

As to what actually causes it, I think this is one of those things that mere
mortals are not meant to know.
