Network Booting Apple IIe/IIGS using Windows PC

Well, I thought about a really odd-ball way of making a boot server for my
Apple IIe using my Windows XP Pro machine. And my experiment actually
worked!!!!!

Needed parts:

- Apple IIe with a Workstation Card, or an Apple IIGS with LocalTalk enabled
- Two LocalTalk couplers, PhoneNET, doesn't matter, along with RJ-11 cable.
I think using an ImageWriter II to Mac Plus cable would actually work as
well.
- LocalTalk-to-EtherTalk bridge. I'm currently using an ASANTE Micro ASANTE
PRINT device. You could also create such a device using a real Macintosh
with LocalTalk-to-EtherTalk bridging software, but I haven't tried that.
- Windows 95 or later PC
- Basilisk II freeware (Macintosh emulator)
- Macintosh ROM (needed to run Basilisk II)
- AppleShare File Server 1.0 or later (I'm using version 3.0 because it
works well with System 7.5.3 and my Macintosh Quadra 650 ROM)
- Macintosh system software (version depends on version of AppleShare you're
running). Keep in mind that Basilisk II does not support the Macintosh 128K
ROMs.

Rough Steps:

Basilisk II allows the use of AppleTalk over your Windows PC's Ethernet
interface. With Basilisk II alone running System 7.5.3, I'm able to access
both my Power Macintosh 8600 running System 9.1 and my eMac running Mac OS X
10.2.5. Once I got that working, I then installed AppleShare 3.0 on the
Basilisk II environment. Running AppleShare Admin, I enabled Apple II
startup, which installs the needed ProDOS 8 software to fire up an Apple IIe
or IIGS. That's basically it. I ran AppleShare File Server and left it.

I installed the Apple II workstation card into slot #1 on my IIe. Pulled out
my disk controller out of slots 5 and 6. Turned on the IIe, and it
immediately found my Basilisk II boot server. Booted using File Server Log
On v1.4. Soon, it listed all three of my Macintosh servers (Basilisk II,
eMac, and Power Mac 8600).

I haven't tried installing GS/OS 6.0.1 onto Basilisk II yet, but I'm
confident that'll work as well.

I'll document this in more detail within the next week or so...
