The side port was for the expansion box, as I remember (or I might be confusing it with the Laser). BTW, there are actually three ports inside, but the third one is for RGB only--again, my memory. Both of my 2000s have RGB cards installed. One has 64K on the 80 column card, the other has an extra bank of 256 chips.
I seem to recall seeing a brochure for the 2000 c. 1987 that said you could take it up to 512K, or more, but my machines date from 1985.
