Not necessarily (but I see why you would want something other
than a serial port).

One thing at a time. When Contiki is running, there would be strong incentive to build an ethernet card, or get the LANceGS card to work with it.

Maybe not.  If it is only for the purposes of timeout determination,
then a very approximate "timing" solution may suffice.  But if you
have the real time, so much the better.


Software:
Contiki uses the uIP stack and works with a clock for timing.


Contiki needs the clock() function, which is missing from the cc65 AppleII library. There could be several versions of this function based upon hardware configuration (mouse card, interrupt manager, clock card(s)) the base version could be a crude software timer. There may also be several other missing functions as well.
