I've read it in a number of places - magazine interviews, and his web site. I believe you will also find it in the book Hackers, by Steve Levi. (I checked, I couldn't find the reference in the pages that cover the creation of the II 250 through 260)
Now, he never said that the machine couldn't do other things, but that he created a computer so he could play games on it - like breakout, which, as I recall, he designed for Steve Jobs who was working for Atari.
