I don't want to rain on your explaration into 'the IIGS in the modern
world' adventure, but somehow all the components for using TCP on the IIGS
just aren't quite there. Joe's advice on you mileage may vary is too
true. Some have good results, some of us not so good.
I have a Rom01 (office) and Rom3 (home) configured to use TCP via the
Appletalk/MacIP layer to a Macintosh running IPNetRouter. It works in the
sense of making telnet connections etc. But I can guarantee a system
lockup within a few minutes of starting a telnet session with Spectrum or
the simple telnet applic bundled with the TCP software. It works, and is
guaranteed to fail! Hopefully a new release of the TCP software will be
the magical fix. At the moment I can't blame the TCP stack, MacIP link
layer, or a specific telnet client. For instance, I can establish a
connection and leave it active for days without problems, only when a
applic starts using the connection does the machine lock up.
So, jump into it, and let us know your mileage. I wish I could help with
a unix connection. Try an anonymous telnet session to
ground.ecn.uiowa.edu (128.255.17.68). It won't let you in, but you can
see if your config is OK.
Show how a Blast from the Past can still be King of the Hill.
