Hmmm...  Did you just check the cable orientation on the drives or on both 
the drives and the motherboard (or drive controller if the board doesn't 
have integrated IDE?)  Also, do the cable connectors on the drives have a 
plastic "frame" around them to make it impossible to connec the cable 
wrong?  If they don't have a frame, it may be possible that you "missed" 
when connecting the cables and you have them over one pin too far...
