That _might_ have been my hack ----- I built/sold about 70-75 
"BUGG-DRIVES"
(Disk ][ with 3-way write-protect switch and with red/green read-write LED 
bicolor indicator.)

The Disk II was great to work on because of its ample empty space and 
simple parts, and socketed chips.  The 3.5" drives are hard to repair; 
harder yet to understand!  The Applied Engineering 3.5" external drive 
came factory equiped with a bi-color red-green LED that works in the same 
way!
