The main problem is that the head can not write densly enough to use the
half tracks, there is a small amount of mangetism on the half-tracks from
the normal tracks that are next to them. Using the half track would likely
scramble data on the normal tracks. Sombody please correct me if I am using
the term "half-track" incorrectly.
Some copy protection schemes use these tracks to create non-standard disk
formats and other schemes.
