Re: Help with appletalk

I currently use my old PowerPC (OS 8.1) as a file server for my IIgs
and I did not have to install any extra software on the Mac. Here's
how:

- Connect the Mac printer port to the IIgs printer port using the
LocalTalk adapters. One end on mine is terminated with a resistor.
On the Mac:
- Go to the Control Panel and select "AppleTalk"
- Change the dropdown to say "Printer Port"
- Go to the Control Panel and select "File Sharing"
- Fill in Owner Name, Owner Password and Computer Name
- If the dialog box says that file sharing is off, turn it on
On the GS:
- I'm assuming you are using System 6.0.1. If not, d/l it from
ftp.apple.com
- Boot the Installer disk and choose "Customize" install
- If you have a HD you can select "Network: AppleShare" or if you
boot from the floppy choose "Network: AppleShare, 3.5" Disk"
- Make sure the installer is pointing to either your HD partition or
System disk then install.
- Reboot and do a command-control-esc to get to the control panel
- In the "slots" section, change slot 7 to say "Built-in AppleTalk"
and press <return> to save.
- Boot up the system. As the system is booting it will prompt you for
you user name.
- After the system is up, go to the contol panel and select
"AppleShare"
- A dialog will pop up and show your Mac as a file server, select it
and click OK. Make sure your user name at the bottom of the dialog is
the one you used as the "Owner Name" on the Mac.
- At this point just follow the dialogs.
- "Macintosh HD" on your IIgs desktop.

If you don't have a HD on the IIgs you can boot up using the file
server. If you need help with it let me know. This is a cool setup.
I use my G4 to d/l disk images and drop them on the old Mac for the
IIgs.

Good Luck,
Steve
