This much I had done, choosing to modify a higher-capacity aftermarket IIe
supply (the original didn't look strong enough to handle the disk and a
machine full of cards...) to provide +5 and +12V power.

That's great info and good to know. It appears that maybe this is "sort of"
working right now. From time to time ProDOS applications (especially when
file operations are being performed) cause the hard drive to make some
noises and the light to blink briefly on the adapter.
