browsing my Apple Thesaurus, i found a picture of a half-height 5.25" floppy drive, manufactured by Qume, that has a black face and appears to be of a standard design. except for not being 100% ALPS-compatible, this seems like a perfect drive to use for towerizing Apple IIs! the ALPS drives can't fit in a tower, due to the strange drive door that pops in and up, instead of using a front latch. is there some way to find and purchase these Qume drives today? what other 5.25" drives could be used?
There were quite a few aftermarket drives. I've heard some of them can have trouble with some copy-protected software but I've never encountered that. When I towerized a IIe I used VTCL mechanisms just because they happened to match in colour. In the half hight size I've also used Chinon and Teac mechanisms. Undoubtedly other makes too but most of the "brands" didn't produce their own mechanisms and it's often hard to tell what's in the case without opening it. Wayne
