Pitty, everyone says how expandable the Apple II platform is (with it's card slots) but nothing recently is done or at least heard about it. Never hear of any interent related projects, speedup components, GUI OSs, or other modern technology interfacing/communication developments. Given it had one of the better DOSs, tons of high end development tools, and hard drives, etc., more so than most of the other 6502 systems, it sure seems to be lagging behind in retro support/represnetation. :-/The Apple II is alive and well, it is simply difficult to contradict what you have to say for the 8-bit models.
I would add here that if one compares eBay listings, Apple II items clearly out number CBM stuff. Further, there are projects going on for 8 bit as well as 16 bit IIs, and we've seen some posted here recently.

The Apple IIgs, which is based on the 65816, is a different story. It already has an excellent GUI from Apple (GS/OS), TCP/IP stack, ethernet card, hard drive controllers (IDE and SCSI), accelerator cards, and other goodies. Unfortunately, most of these are left over from more prosperous days so there has been little incentive to develop new hardware and software. But opportunities are abound and people take advantage of them when the need arises. Byron.
