Somewhere around the introduction of System 6, Apple added the the
resource version of an icon (this might be called an rBundle, my
memory is getting rusty too :-). These are stored in the resource
fork of an application and when you first run that application from
the Finder, Finder will pull that information out and add it to its
Desktop file (a hidden file in the Icons folder).
