A couple of important details I forgot to include:
The easy way to make your own IIgs to PC null modem cable is to start with a
Mac/IIgs printer cable. Cut it in half to make two, or cut one end off.
Strip the wires and sketch a diagram of which color goes to which pin. Use a
continuity checker, which can just be a couple of batteries and a bulb, or
an ohm meter.  Get a connector from RadioShack or similar. Solder the wires
according to the diagram.
