Cuture and Brand Loyalty (was: Math coprocessor for PC Transporter?)
I agree wholeheartedly with Jason's explanation... When was the last time
you saw a simple VGA ISA card sell for $350? Someone sold their Second Site
VGA Card for the Apple II series for that amount back on 05/15/2002.
However, let me extend Jason's idea one step deeper... The PC culture was
never a "movement". Nobody wrote songs about the PC, idolize ex-IBM CEOs, or
defend the PC platform spiritually. Apple II people did all of that and
more. Apple II people are somewhat like Edsel http://www.edsel.net/ car
owners. My parents told me what a piece of *@&# the Edsel was. Maybe it was,
maybe it wasn't... I don't know! However, the comparison between Edsel and
Apple II people are quite similar. Quite interesting! If companies were to
study brand loyalty and practice their findings, it would be a much better
corporate world.
All in all, this is probably the heart of why collectors are willing to pay
zillions of dollars into legacy hardware and software, and others will not
pay 5-cents for the same thing. If you do not understand any of this, then
think about why Beanie Babies are now worth less than the PVC beans they're
made from. :)
