Double-density was the spec for Apple II disks (SSDD), at least for
16-sector disks. DSDD were desired because they were guaranteed to work
on all SS computer systems. TRS80 recorded on top side, Apple II on
bottom side, so for a disk to work on both models, it was by defn
double-sided, even though in use it was SS because of only one r/w head.
My hunch is all 5.25 disks were manufactured DS. Then VAR sold the disks
as SS, or DS for a higher price due to greed, greed, greed. The media
cost was the same. The argument was the VAR had to guarantee both sides,
not just one side, even though they didn't know which side. Successful
floppy disk salespeople eventually moved up to selling beachfront property
in the Arizona desert.
