The eject button and software eject should both work normally whether
you have an 800k or 1.44mb drive in the case.
One thing you could try is to hook the 800k mechanism back up to confirm
that the trouble is in the 1.44mb mechanism. On the odd chance that
something went wrong during the swap.
If the 800k mechanism ejects then
With the 1.44mb mechanism I'd check to see if the eject motor is still
connected. At the back of the drive mechanism on it's circuitboard (not
counting the 20 pin connector) you'll see three connectors, a 4 pin and
two 3 pin. The 3 pin right beside the 4 pin leads to the eject motor.
Examine those to make sure the connector is still plugged in and the
wires haven't been damaged.
If everything looks ok then the easiest thing to try is to swap eject
motors from the 800k drive to the 1.44mb one. I've done this a couple of
times and it's a snap. The eject motor is held in by two screws. Undo
them, lift out the eject motor and unplug the 3 pin connector. Then just
drop in the other eject motor then put in the screws and plug in the
connector
