unable to load prodos

I borrowed a floppy drive from a friend today (model no A9M0106), and
tried to use it to boot my IIgs. All I get is "unable to boot prodos"
after a few seconds. The GS/OS install floppies were written on a
beige G3 with MacOS 8.6 and Disk Copy 6.3. What could be wrong here,
besides bad disks?
