The drive in the Beige G3 is a cheaper model that doesn't handle 800K 
disks all that well.  The problem you've run across is a common one for 
doing that.  Some people have had luck making sure the disks they were 
using were formatted for ProDOS first on an Apple II, but I never had 
any luck with that.
