Regular ADT (ADT v1.21 or v1.22) expects to work with an Apple
Super Serial Card (or a compatible card or on a II model with a compatible
built-in serial port-- like a //c or //c+). It will not work with the IIgs
built-in serial ports. On a IIgs, you should be using ADTgs.

ADT, especially with a IIgs, is intended as a 'getting started' utility.
That is, you use ADTgs to transfer enough software on 5.25" .dsk disk images
to move up to a standard connection-- one where a general purpose telecom
program on the IIgs is talking to Hyperterm (or whatever) on your PC or Mac.

The reason is simple: programs like Spectrum, ProTerm, ModemMGR, and
ZLink can transfer many more kinds of files, and do it a lot quicker, than
ADTgs can. For example, you can download and transfer huge quantities of
software available as ShrinkIt .shk and .sdk files, including whole 800k
disks.

Even .dsk disk images (5.25" and 3.5") are easier to deal with. You just
transfer the file to your IIgs hard disk or a 3.5" diskette and use ASIMOV
or DSK2FILE to convert the image to diskette on your GS.

Plus, the hardware-- the cable for making a NULL modem connection-- is
the same.
