I believe the later firmware allowed the eject button to work for the
drive in the D1 position.
Another solution is to just hook the eject button directly up to the
eject motor. It works well except you'd have to be careful hot to push
the button while the disk is reading and writing. I suspect it wouldn't
harm the drive but I've never actually tried it.
It's fairly easy to make this mod in a reversible manner.
