     You could try moving the ribbon a notch away from the paper.

     It may be that your print head is gunked up. You might try
cleaning it with liquid detergent in warm water. (Avoid using
solvents like turpentine, etc.. They may dissolve the mask which
holds the pins in place.)

     Another possibility is that the ribbon may have cratered.
Over time, some of the plastic pieces inside the cartridge seem
to break down into mush. You can use a knife to pop open the
cartridge and check to make sure it's okay.
