Well since you have drive noise and the display is now working, that
would seem to suggest that the boot diskette doesn't work.  If the drive
cable has been kinked and shows a visible crease in one or more wires,
there could be a physical defect in the cable preventing it from
working, but I'd try a 'known good' boot disk next.

I could send you a 'known good' diskette and/ or other necessities if
you have no luck finding something else to test with.  At this stage, it
is not unusual for diskettes to stop booting as most are over 8 years
old.  (8 years is the the average age that disk start to get flaky on
me, of course the elephant SSSD diskette I got in 84 still works
flawlessly.
