Approaching Thunderstorm? Perhaps heat and / or humidity were factors.
Perhaps the disks themselves were colder than ambient (somehow) and had a
thin layer of condensation on them... Stops VCR's from recording, so that
may be an answer. The disks would have warmed up / dried out by the next
day.
Just guessing.
