Apple ][ display on power-up?

I discovered an original Apple II while sorting through garage boxes
this past weekend (in the same box with the VIC-20, Atari 400, and the
Mattel Aquarius).  I connected a power cord and video cable and
powered it up.  The first display was a black screen full of "?"
marks.  Subsequent power cycles yielded only a white field on a black
background.  There are no peripherals and no internal cards.   I do
not remember what, if anything, should display in this condition (it's
a bitch to be 50!).  What should be on the display if it is funtioning
correctly?  Thanks.
