Somehow GS/OS and Mac OS files maintain data on which application is used to open it. I could be wrong about this, but if the primary type and aux type of a file match something which isn't on your system (or defined ad part of an icon) it could result in the same message you got. If it is a data file then open your application first and open the file from the "file" menu item.
It's been years since I've looked at this. Hopefully someone can take it from where I left off.
