This one has an easy explanation: you don't have enough RAM for what you
are trying to do. AppleWorks GS requires a minimum of 1.25 MB of RAM
(preferably more). The AppleTalk support code is tying up enough RAM
that you don't have sufficient memory left for AppleWorks GS.
You'll have to get a bigger RAM card (or a ROM 3 IIgs with the same
memory card) if you want to use this combination.

This is because you are turning off AppleTalk by making these changes,
so the AppleTalk software isn't being loaded, freeing up some RAM.

Maybe. The Apple IIgs LaserWriter driver is pretty old - it dates back
to Postscript Level 1. I only had limited success using it with my HP
LaserJet 6P, which is Postscript Level 2.
