Sorry I am not knowledgeable on AWGS but... I am on printing to a Laserwriter 
from a GS:
I have a Laserwriter IIgm well sort of, it THINKS its a IIIg but it is really 
a IIsc and a HP laserjet IId I raided for parts.  All of them use the same 
basic Canon engine btw.... ANYWAY..
This IIg can be addrssed either via Ethernet or Localtalk.  I had it on 
Ethernet only and one Mac set as LT Bridge with IIGS and IIes (the Mac runs 
Appleshare 3.0.3 on System 7.5.3).
I could see it in the Net Printer Control Panel and it would select.  Matter 
of fact I could even load Imagewriter II emulation from the IIgs and the sheet 
of paper saying: "I done that thing" would come out, BUT...like you I kept 
popping that error whenever I tried to print (Shadowwrite, Fredwriter, Teach 
Text etc, didn't matter what app).  Tried amost EVERHTHING I did... until:
For grins I tired hooking a phone net wire on the localtalk leg to the 
localtalk port on the IIg.  Went back to the Macs and saw: 2 Laserwriters in 
Chooser..  humm...
Went to the IIGS and yep: 2 Laserwriters. I choose the 2nd one (same printer, 
localtalk route).  Danged if it didn't print!
So MY advice: run LT Bridge on a Mac, hook phone net, Appletalk, or a serial 
cable to the printer and  try that...
