Last week, a fellow collector gave me a bag of what he thought was Apple II
software. It was mostly copies that I could see at first glance so I didn't
bother to go through it until this evening. After sorting it all out, I
discovered a complete set of Basis 108 system disks, and it turns out the
entire collection of misc. software in the bag was patched to run on a 108.
I already have one complete set of original Basis system disks, and CP/M plus
but my set has gold tone labels. This new set of originals has white labels,
which makes me wonder if it's a different Revision, or something like that. I
have a Basis 108 that appears to have all of the "latest" Basis upgrades
installed, and some bits and pieces of the Sacramento club homebrew add-on
kits. However my Precision Echo (a Basis clone) looks like it has the
original non-upgraded motherboard, with gold capped RAM chips and all. I'll
pull the PE out this weekend and try these disks out on it.
The man who gave me the bag of disks (Chris) works at a local used computer
store where people dump their old systems. Since someone dropped of these
disks, I'm wondering if maybe they dropped off the whole system as well. I
plan to go back by in the next few days to see if they might have it in the
back room somewhere.
Life is ironic sometimes. If I was actually looking for Basis system disks, I
would have never, ever found them but just when I least expect it, someone
hands me a bag of them. I wonder... if I decided to collect something else,
would I suddenly start finding Apple II clones by the dozen?
