You should be able to connect directly to your Win98 box directly from OS X.
In the finder, click Go->connect to server, and type
"smb://192.168.0.1/sharename" in the box (replace the IP address with the
address of the Win98 machine).
Be sure to have file sharing turned on on the Win98 box :-).
