Re: Booting An Apple IIGS From Linux

That part of the implementataion should have been the hardest part, but even when I used a real Mac to start the boot process, the GS didn't seem to want to use the system files from a Linux AFPServer. (even after I played with the netatalk Auxtype bug)

I gave up since it was just something to play at since I have a hard disk on my GS anyway.

Oh, don't give up! :)

Seriously, is anyone interested in attempting this sort of project? I
cannot imagine anything cooler than being able to boot a series of
IIGS machines from a Linux box, giving those precious wonders a
literal WEALTH of storage space potential and print options. Okay, so
maybe the latter is already available, but seriously: I love this
idea. :)

Sadly I am not a technically brilliant sort-of person. Surely there
are enough people who could benefit from this to warrant further
investegation?

I actually started looking into netatalk-based support for Apple II boot protocol some years ago. Unfortunately, the only technical information I could find (from Inside Appletalk) was extremely hand-wavey and omitted any real details. Leland Wallace (is he still with Apple?) mentioned that he'd try to dig some details out of their tech archives, but I never heard of any success.

At this point, the only hope would be to packet-sniff a boot operation against an older 68k mac Appletalk server and reverse engineer the protocol. Maybe someday when I retire...
